Bernard K Appiah aka Pure Akan
Box 151, Abeka, Accra Ghana
I am Bernard Nana (Kwabena) Appiah (born February 1990) better known by my stage name Akan. I am a Hip life, Highlife artiste from Lapaz, a suburb of Accra-Ghana.
I perform in Twi with a fusion of high-life rhythms laced with rap (anwensɛm) and catchy choruses to support my storylines. My music is authentic to Akan theatrical nativity and story telling, evidently proven in my relatable rhetoric. My fluent, lyrical delivery in Twi, with such agile dexterity and cultural references make me a wonder to listen to. I like to reel in my audience to join me on a journey. You can relate to my art whilst on this adventure of reflection.
I give credit of my art to influences from my grandparents, with whom I spent most of my vacation during the early years. I started with a self-titled debut album in 2015. The Akan E.P received positive reviews across the industry, who compared the project to Hiplife legend Ɔbrafoɔ's Pae Mu Ka. The track about the ancient Asante priest Ɔkɔmfo Anɔkye stood out as fans favourite. It topped radio charts, gaining co-signs from prolific names like Sakɔdeɛ, Wanlov and legendary hiplife producer Hammer of The Last Two and followed with collaborations with peers like Worlasi, Poetra Asantewaa and music producer Jayso. The rise to the Akan Brand led to appearances on BeatPhreaks PHREAKOUTLIVE CONCERT 2016 and ChaleWote Street Art Festival in 2015.
